I agree that we are still a long way from economically viable automated driving, and I agree that the industry should be more transparent about how it uses remote facilitation. But I don't think developing an L5 system is the right goal.

If one or more companies develop a robotaxi service that (1) many consumers prefer to other modes of transportation (particularly individually-owned vehicles), (2) is safer and less carbon-intensive than the modes it replaces, and (3) is financially sustainable, I would consider that a success.

But that goal could be achieved even if robotaxis continue to rely on remote facilitation and continue to have restricted ODDs. In fact, it's possible that--in the medium-term--a robotaxi service may only reach sufficient trip volume to be profitable within dense metropolitan areas. If so, it may not be wise to invest now in reducing ODD restrictions.

SAE J3016 recommends using the term "automated driving" instead of "autonomous vehicle." And I agree because external communication can enhance safety, and we shouldn't discourage it.

In case it's interesting, Bryant Walker Smith and I offer our suggestions on robotaxi regulations here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5595951

The implications for AI and AGI are compelling and confirm my very limited experience using tools that should solve big bottleneck problems in the small publications business I work for ... but don't. I have yet to encounter any real "thinking" I can fully trust in a field (writing, primarily) that should be among the first to be solved. Improvements, yes. Solutions, not even ... to the point of making things worse. Tiny hallucinations in a bed of otherwise excellent mimicry are extremely dangerous. Your points on software are analogous.

Just as we don't fully understand all the ways our biology interacts with that of our biomes and the environment, I'm skeptical that actual intelligence can exist devoid of emotional, physical and spiritual inputs. To say nothing of the complexities we don't even know exist. Nines all the way down.
